A large Bluegill caught near Manasas, VA

I had a few free hours yesterday morning, so I went to a recently
discovered fishing pond. I tried every fly (wet, dry, streamer, popper)
that my fly fishing guide-books suggested for fall bass fishing. Absolutely
nothing worked. I was about to leave and I remembered fishing buddy Paul Radke
swearing by the black foam ant. I never had any previous luck with this pattern, but I gave it a try.
I caught six big Bluegill with it... though no bass. The one pictured above is my biggest Bluegill ever.

I prepare for one of my final casts on Mossy Creek near Bridgewater, VA

Brian Carroll and I went fly fishing for trout in the Shenandoah Valley yesterday.  We hired a guide.  Drought conditions and hot weather made for unfavorable trout fishing.  We caught two small Fall Fish.  This was Brian's first fly fishing experience.  The conditions we were fishing under were good for learning the mechanics of fly fishing though.  We did have fun.
